Meet—

Ulas

We met Ulas when we wanted to get some aerial shots over Hieropolis, an ancient Greek city dedicated to Hades, the god of the underworld. Drones were not allowed, but we looked up and saw this paraglider...and next thing we knew, we were strapped to Ulas jumping off a cliff.

Q
When did you start paragliding?

A
I started when I was 16 years old. I've done over 2000 flights. This is an amazing place because when you fly, you think about the people who were living here thousands of years ago. I bet they could never imagine humans flying.

Q
What else do you do?

A
Aside from this, I study food engineering. Sometimes I fly right onto campus and land in front of the classrooms.

Q
Does anyone get scared?

A
Today I was flying with a young girl who cried and cried, but I told her it will be okay. She was so happy she flew. When I was a child I looked at the birds and I knew I wanted to fly. I wanted to be an F16 pilot but I couldn't. But this is better. No window.

Q
What kind of music do you listen to?

A
I listen to rap. And a Kazakhstan rock group called Ulytau.

Q
Any last thoughts?

A
I'm not afraid of anything in life. I can do everything.
